Demystifying the Legislative Process with Julie Stokes and Walt Leger (Part 1)

YLC alumni and former legislators Julie Stokes and Walt Leger will host a two-part webinar where they will discuss their time serving as Louisiana Legislatures and the leadership strategies used to enact meaningful change in the community. During this candid conversation, Julie and Walt will discuss working across political lines to create meaningful change in our city and state. Our speakers will introduce the state legislature structure and processes, as well as share how the average citizen can work with the legislature to create a meaningful impact on their community.

In the first part of this two-part webinar series, participants will leave with an understanding of: 

  • Committee structure and the topics in the legislative session: education, healthcare, general commerce
  • How committees interact with the local government
  • Practical ways to interact with the legislature, including committee jurisdiction, the appropriations process, fiscal notes, and lobbyists
